Instead of firing people, companies could reduce everyone's salary and working time by 10% during a depression.  We are in a depression.

This is not a new idea.  It worked during the 1970's by having everyone work nine days in a fortnight instead of ten days.  When the recession was over, everyone ramped up to a full schedule.

This plan would help families.  It could be optional, or a matter of law.  We could require it, or we could excuse participating companies from paying Unemployment Compensation Tax.

In the case of hospitals, no one should be fired unless all national safety standards for staffing 24/7 for technicians and nurses have been met.  We are all patients.
